Launched in 1869, this British-built vessel was designed for speed, primarily to transport tea from China to Britain, and later, to carry wool from Australia. The historic tea clipper is one of the mose famous sights along the River Thames. But why was Greenwich chosen as Cutty Sark's final home?

 

Step back in time and voyage through more than 150 years of seafaring history. Uncover tales of life on board, steer Cutty Sark from Sydney to London, and learn how the ship set sail through hands-on exhibits. Historic photographs, films and interactive ship plans help bring the famous tea clipper’s story to life. 

 

Enjoy stunning views across the River Thames. Look out at the London skyline, spot the landmarks spread around you and snap that all-important picture with the deck and rigging surrounding you.

 

Reach up and touch the copper hull of the ship that made Cutty Sark the fastest of its day. The Dry Dock is one of the most dramatic locations in London, with the ship hovering in mid-air above you.

ACCESSIBILITY:

 

  • Cutty Sark and all other Royal Museums Greenwich sites have accessible toilets, and our cafés and gift shops are wheelchair-accessible

  • Please be aware that there are steps and gradients in Cutty Sark Gardens on the approach to the ship.

  • Cutty Sark is wheelchair accessible with lifts providing access to all levels of the ship. Some areas of the Main Deck are not wheelchair accessible, but virtual access is provided to these spaces.

  • The original ship structure restricts the size of the lift on board, but mobility scooters can be accommodated on board providing they fit in our lifts. Measurements for the lifts are included in the Cutty Sark access statement. No e-scooters or e-bikes are permitted on board as per our visitor regulations.

  • There are no cloakroom facilities at the Cutty Sark.
